Magoha: Over 16,000 candidates with C+ did not apply to join University

A total of 123,963 candidates who sat the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) have secured placements at various universities this year, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha says.

This constitutes 85.8pc of the 144,466 candidates who attained a mean grade of C+ and therefore qualified for various degree programmes.

“90% of the 2021 KCSE candidates who attained a mean grade of C + and above and applied were competitively placed, with 85% of them getting degree programmes and 5% taking up courses in TVET Institutions,” CS Magoha said.

According to the Education CS, 67,237 of these candidates are male while 56,726 are their female counterparts.

However, an unprecedented number of qualified candidates who for no known reason opted not to apply to be considered for a position at the institutions of higher learning.

“Some 16,310 candidates who qualified for degree programmes in the 2021 KCSE examination did not submit applications and may have opted to pursue other opportunities,” noted the CS

Speaking at Eastleigh High School in Nairobi where he also commissioned a new CBC classroom Saturday, Prof Magoha announced 250,052 students submitted applications for placement to universities, TVET institutions and TTCs, and all applicants were successfully placed.

“A total of 124,258 applicants have been placed in TVET institutions (55,553 male and 68,705 female),” he said

For the first time, KUCCPS placed applicants for admission to the 32 public diploma primary teacher training colleges. A total of 1,538 (1,216 female, 322 male) have been placed in Diploma in Primary Teacher Education and Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education.

KUCCPS also placed 293 (129 male, 164 female) to three colleges offering Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education, namely: Kagumo, Kibabii and Lugari TTCs.

“These students will be trained to deliver the CBC curriculum.” Prof Magoha disclosed
