Nyakach MP contestant arrested over fake gold scandal

Opande was aboard a Kisumu bound flight from JKIA

Former Nyakach MP aspirant Jonathan Opande was today arrested at JKIA aboard a Kisumu bound flight. The politician who unsuccessfully contested for the Nyakach Member of Parliament position in 2022 on an independent ticket was nabbed by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations over allegations of scamming two Thai nationals 100 million shillings in the sale of fake gold.

A raid conducted in his house turned office led to the recovery of several items including fake gold nuggets and bars, a weighing machine and a smelting unit. Also recovered from the house were a mining license, Nairobi county business permits and company seals which await verification to confirm their authenticity. At the back of the building was a smelting machine believed to be used in the melting of brass metal and polishing it to look like gold used to scam unsuspecting buyers.

However Opondo blamed his woes on political witch-hunt stating that his business was legitimate. Opondo will spend the weekend in custody and is expected to be arraigned on Monday.
