Kenya Kwanza Coalition presidential candidate and Deputy President William Ruto names Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate ahead of the August Polls.
This comes after meeting that laster over 12 hours on Sunday and in an unusual midnight press conference called by Ruto’s Director of Communications Hussein Mohamed at 1 am, decided to keep Kenyans guessing for a few extra hours.
It is reported that the Saturday meeting at Karen was called off immaturely after there was a stalemate between the supporter of Prof Kithure Kindiki and Rigathi Gachague.
“The running mate issue was extensively discussed today, we are happy to announce that we have a decision as Kenya Kwanza and the decision has been reached and will be officially communicated to you, to the country tomorrow,” said Mr Mohamed who later clarified he meant Sunday and not Monday.
Speaking at Karen, Ruto unveiled Gachagua amid claps from members of the Kenya Kwanza.
Ruto made the announcement on Sunday afternoon, after Saturday’s meeting that went late into the night.
“I nominate my good friend Rigathi Gachagua to be my running mate in the August 9, 2022 presidential election,” Ruto told a news conference on Sunday.
Ruto said he chose Gachagua from other worthy candidates who made it to the shortlist among them Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, Murang’a Women Representative Alice Wahome and Speaker Justin Muturi.
In accepting the nomination, Gachagua said, “this is the biggest day in my life and I truly thank you our Deputy President for the trust and confidence you have bestowed on me.”
And he pledged that “he will not let Kenyans and the Hustler nation down.”
During the Sunday press conference, Ruto said he will sign an Executive Order during his first days in office, if he wins the election, to give his deputy formal responsibilities which include coordination of Cabinet activities.
